Speed transforms following distance from a minor courtesy into a hard physics problem. At 60 mph, your vehicle covers approximately 88 feet in a single second. Average human reaction time — the gap between seeing a brake light and your foot reaching the pedal — runs between 1.5 and 2.5 seconds depending on alertness, age, and distraction level. That means before your brakes engage at highway speed, you may have already traveled well over 100 feet.
Braking distance then adds on top of that. On dry pavement with good tires, a typical passenger car traveling at 60 mph requires roughly 180 feet to come to a complete stop after the brakes are applied. Add reaction distance and the total stopping distance climbs past 300 feet — the length of a football field.

Tailgating collapses this buffer to near zero. When the vehicle ahead stops suddenly — because of a pedestrian, a debris field, or a hard panic stop from the car ahead of them — there is simply no room left to avoid a collision.
Why Drivers Underestimate the Risk
Part of the problem is perception. At speed, the human eye is not well calibrated to judge distance in feet. A 200-foot gap feels enormous when you are standing beside a road but appears almost negligible from inside a moving vehicle. Experienced drivers often believe their reflexes are faster than they actually are, particularly when driving a familiar route in good conditions.
There is also a behavioral element: many drivers tailgate not out of genuine urgency but as a form of pressure — trying to move slower traffic out of the left lane. This habit is dangerous regardless of intent. The driver ahead may brake harder and more abruptly in response to feeling crowded, which only worsens the situation.
Distraction compounds everything. Cognitive distraction from phone use increases reaction time measurably — adding another fraction of a second that, at speed, represents dozens of extra feet traveled before any response begins.
Use the Three-Second Rule as Your Baseline
Pick any fixed roadside marker and count three full seconds after the car ahead passes it. If you pass that marker before finishing the count, ease off the gas. In adverse weather or low visibility, extend your count to at least five or six seconds.
Applying a Safe Following Distance in Practice
The three-second rule is the most practical starting point. As the vehicle ahead passes a fixed marker — a sign, a shadow line on the road — count one-thousand-one, one-thousand-two, one-thousand-three. If you pass that same marker before finishing the count, you are too close. Ease off the gas until the gap opens.
Three seconds is a floor, not a ceiling. In rain or wet pavement, braking distances extend significantly. In fog, you may need to see well beyond your stopping distance before you can react to what the road ahead holds. At night, on gravel, or when towing, increase following distance further.
Behind large trucks or buses, a longer gap serves a dual purpose: it keeps you out of the driver's rear blind spot, and it gives you a line of sight past the vehicle so you can read traffic ahead. Understanding how blind spots form applies equally to your position behind a large vehicle as it does to vehicles hiding in yours.
It is also worth noting that maintaining a proper gap rarely costs meaningful travel time. The difference in arrival time between following safely and tailgating across a typical commute is measured in seconds, not minutes. Speed-related misconceptions follow a similar pattern — the perceived time savings rarely match reality.
